Dr Varun Kapila

Dr Varun Kapila

MD FRCSC RPVI

Varun Kapila is the Chief of Vascular Surgery at William Osler Health System. He graduated with his MD from the University of Ottawa and completed his General Surgical Residency and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Kapila is widely published and has conducted a range of research in the area of vascular and cardiovascular medicine. He has received many awards for his academic and professional work including being awarded a gold medal for clerkship medicine and the silver medal for his academic performance at the University of Ottawa. He has taken on many leadership roles throughout his professional and academic career, including being the Secretary and Chair of the Provincial Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario.

As Osler’s Chief of Vascular Surgery, Dr. Kapila is helping to create a comprehensive Vascular and Endovascular Program which introduced leading-edge surgical procedures to this region. His interests include endovascular aneurysm repair, peripheral arterial angioplasty and stenting, vascular medicine and risk reduction, and medical education.

Dr David Kelton

Dr David Kelton

MD FRCPC RPVI

David Kelton is the Site Chief of Diagnostic Imaging at William Osler Health System’s Brampton Civic Hospital and a specialist in minimally-invasive vascular intervention. He graduated with his MD from the University of Toronto and completed his radiology residency at the University of Toronto where he was chief resident.  He completed his Vascular Interventional Radiology Fellowship at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Kelton has received numerous awards for his academic achievements, including the Chief Resident Award and Gordon Potts Award for Outstanding Resident at University of Toronto.

Dr. Kelton is helping to create a comprehensive vascular and endovascular program at Osler.  He co-led the development of the critical limb ischemia (CLI) revascularization program and the Vascular Lab at Osler.

Dr. Kelton’s clinical focus is on amputation prevention and endovenous treatment of advanced vein disease.

Dr Leonard Tse

Dr Leonard Tse

MD FRCSC MASc RPVI

Originally born and raised in Ottawa, Dr. Leonard Tse graduated from the University of Toronto M.D. program in 1997. He completed his General Surgery training at the University of Toronto in 2002. He finished his Vascular Surgery training at McGill University in Montreal in 2004. He then joined the attending staff as a Vascular Surgeon at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary, where he served as the Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Residency Training program of the University of Calgary.

After 4 years of practice, he returned to the University of Toronto in 2008 to pursue a Masters of Applied Science degree in Biomedical Engineering, and join the attending staff at the Toronto General Hospital, UHN. As a Surgeon-Scientist and an Affiliate Faculty of the Techna Institute, his research program focused on the engineering aspects of advanced minimally-invasive endovascular stent-graft technology, and computational methodology.

As a Vascular Surgeon at a quaternary care centre, he provided clinical care and surgery to patients with complex vascular disease.

As an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto he was involved in the teaching and training of medical students, residents, and fellows.

After 7 years at the Toronto General Hospital, he was recruited to join the multidisciplinary team at the William Osler Health System. His efforts are now concentrated on surgery and clinical patient care, and helping to develop the collaborative Vascular and Endovascular program that will be providing the best vascular care to the population of the Central West LHIN in new state-of-the-art facilities located within the Brampton Civic Hospital.

Dr John Byrne

MB BCh MD FRCSI FSVS

Dr. John Byrne is a graduate of The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Irish trained vascular and endovascular surgeon. Prior to coming to Canada in 2013, he was the chairperson of the Irish Higher Surgical Training Group and previously served on the trainee council of the European Society for Vascular Surgery.

After a fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at the University of Toronto, he was on staff as a vascular surgeon-scientist at Toronto General Hospital from 2015-2021. As a surgeon-scientist, he was an Assistant Professor at University of Toronto, Associate Member of the Institute of Medical Science, and Affiliate Scientist at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute. Dr. Byrne has been awarded over ten prizes and recognitions for his research and academic activity.

In 2018, Dr. Byrne won the prestigious Wylie Scholar Award from Vascular Cures and the Society for Vascular Surgery in the United States. He was the second doctor in Canada ever to win this award. In total, Dr. Byrne has obtained 1.3 million dollars in grant funding in his career as principal researcher/investigator. In 2020, he was awarded $250,000 from the Canadian New Frontiers in Research Fund to investigate the use of a novel type of PET-MRI scan to predict which patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm are at risk of future aneurysm growth.

Dr. Byrne was recently a part of Operation Remote Immunity which administered much needed COVID vaccines to remote indigenous communities in Northern Ontario. Dr. Byrne is now focused on the clinical care of patients with vascular disease, in particular, abdominal aortic aneurysm, limb preservation, carotid disease and vascular access. He was recently recruited to the multi-disciplinary vascular and interventional radiology divisions at William Osler Health System.
